Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a: Which Ethernet Cable to Specify in 2026 (Cost & Use-Case Table)

The Three Tiers Buyers Actually Choose Between

Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6a is the cable-tier decision every network buyer faces first. Most “which cable” questions are really “how fast, how far, at what price.” Here is the buyer’s view of Ethernet and network cables, focused on the patch and structured cables you specify.

Cat6a shielded Ethernet cable

For the underlying standard, see Wikipedia: Category 6 cable.

Comparison Table

Tier Bandwidth 10G reach Typical cost Best for
Cat5e 1 GbE n/a (1G only) Lowest Legacy 1G, short runs
Cat6 10 GbE 37–55 m Mid Mixed 1G/10G enterprise
Cat6a 10 GbE 100 m Higher Full 10G to the desktop

The 10GBASE-T Distance Trap

Cat6 supports 10G only up to ~55 m; beyond that it falls back to 1G. If your riser runs exceed 55 m and you need 10G, Cat6a is the spec—not “Cat6 everywhere.”

Where Cat5e Still Wins

For PoE cameras, door access and 1G workstation drops, Cat5e is mature, cheap and plenty. Over-specifying Cat6a on every drop is the fastest way to burn margin with zero benefit.

Spec Rule of Thumb

  • 1G only / PoE / short → Cat5e.
  • Mixed 1G–10G, runs <55 m → Cat6.
  • 10G to desktop, long runs → Cat6a (shielded).
